Client Snapshot: Unbothered Foods

Welcome to a look behind-the-scenes of a consumer packaged goods (CPG) product brand photo shoot! This photo shoot, for Unbothered Foods, was the second time I worked with this female-founded, locally-made brand. The first photo shoot was for the launch of the brand, and this one was for updated packaging and product offerings.

About Product Photography

Product photography, for food brands specifically, is always about balancing the portrayal of the company’s branding and the physical product itself. I love working with brands who are just getting started on their visual branding journey because it makes for a fun shoot with lots of variation in the shots. You also get to lean into the branding and get to know the personality of the products in a fun way.

What I Use for a Product Photo Shoot

This shoot was done at my home photography studio in Chicago, and the client opted to come and participate with me. Having another set of hands was helpful for this shoot, since there was lots of modeling involved, and it also allowed us to riff on the shot list in a way that you can’t always do if a client doesn’t see the live shoot.

For this shoot, we pulled props and backdrops to fit the branding, then added food and drink props as necessary to fill the scenes. Between the founder and I, we had most of the props on hand and didn’t need to source anything specific for this shoot.

Lighting-wise, we wanted to use bright, un-diffused light to capture the playful branding. We used my Godox strobe without any diffusers to create a sunny, bright set.

Of course, I shot on my Canon 6D Mark II with my 24-70mm lens, but I also got out my 100mm macro lens to capture the texture of these beautiful crackers.

Shoot Concept

Like I mentioned, this shoot built off of the concepts we had shot previously but with new branding. We wanted to play into the primary colors of the flavors, so we built monochromatic scenes to introduce each flavor profile. For the group shots and lifestyle shots, we incorporated aspirational brands, settings, and scenarios in which you’d be enjoying Unbothered.

The final images for this food product photography shoot turned out wonderfully. The client has used them successfully on her website, social channels, and even on her WeFunder page for her first raise. I love providing clients with versatile photos that they can make the most of, so it’s been incredible to watch these images work for Unbothered.
