Suspend belief for a moment and pretend there’s a version of Barak Obama who would let a friendship fizz out. That’s exactly what’s happened in Hope Never Dies. Joe Biden is lonely and misses the good old days. And when a mystery falls into his lap, there’s only one person who can help him solve it. But will they also solve the case of their fizzled friendship?!?! (Spoiler alert: they do.)

Listen, is this going to be the best book you read this year? Hell no. That award is either going to go to Priestdaddy or The Idiot or some other ~next level~ read. But this one might just be the most charming, cheesy, corny, adorable book you read this year, and for that reason alone, I’m into it.

The book is full of all kinds of weird sayings you can totally picture Joe Biden actually saying and then immediately becoming a meme for saying, and that’s just the beginning of the charm. There’s a rough-around-the-edges Obama who’s got catchphrases of his own. There’s a Secret Service agent who has to be evaded so they can solve the mystery. There’s a gritty, all-American murder. There’s undertones of a shifting America and the problems facing our country. What more could you want?

It’s a cute book for sure. It’ll make you chortle, make you scroll back through Pete Souza’s Instagram to relieve the glory days, and make you triple check that you’re registered to vote so that just in case Obama comes back and runs, you’re prepared. No? Just me? Never mind.

I mean, it’s a bromance starring everyone’s favorite president. You could probably afford to read this.
